Many thanks for the replies
I think that Testdisk is what I am looking for, but the question is how good is it. I have also been looking at none free alternatives such as Spinrite 6. But I think I will go with Testdisk first.

Recuva worked for me. It's hit or miss, whatever you do, pull the drive,
make an image, and do your recovery on the image.
