video file playing in debian?

You will love mplayer
sudo apt-get install mplayer
I velieve is the command with the correct package name. It probably 
plays more video formats than any other package available, and it works 
either from the command line or from GNOME.
Do
apt-cache search mplayer
to be sure I gave you the correct package name.
