OK, following up on Chriss's suggestion of gpodder, I did an
apt-get install gpodder?/sid
it was much more successful than I was manually.  Reading its man-page it says 
"gpo" is the commandline version.  So I went in an gpo interactive shell, 
looking to subscribe, here's what happens:

Back again live, for some reason gpodder requires a login?  I also see nothing 
in its short manual about naming conventions?  But still, thanks, this may be 
progress.
