cvlc apparently limited

I tried listening to a commercial cd I bought on the computer with cvlc.  
I'm using that since this is a command line environment.  The syntax on 
videolan.org for this in the playing howto is cvlc cdda://[device]@[track] 
so I try cvlc cdda:///dev/sr0@1 and get cannot open input device.  One of 
the eye candy users wrote the open disk option would have to be used, but 
from what I could find open disk has no documentation for cvlc command 
line format.
