/proc is procfs, not ext2 or ext3.

To mount an ext3 filesystem as ext2, all you need to do is to unmount
it cleanly and then remount as ext2: no conversion is required.
Changing the fs types in /etc/fstab to ext2 and then doing a clean
reboot into 2.4.0 should work fine.
