I'd suggest unmounting it, running e2fsck and then remounting.

For the root fs, I seem to recall that it is marked dirty
after tune2fs has added a journal, and your initscripts
nicely run fsck on it for you before root is mounted
rw.  But really, I need to do more work on this.  Proceed with

We're still thinking about it.  I guess it'd be sensible to
ask people to use the fsck and mount patches, then if any
unforseens pop up we can try something else.
