Did you compile ext3 support as a module? It needs to be built into the kernel to mount your root fs as ext3.

It's o.k. to compile ext3 and jdb as modules and include them in initrd file with command:

"mkinitrd --with=ext3 /boot/initrd-2.4.x-y.img 2.4.x-y "
