I'd go with 2.4-ac plus ext3.  The ac kernels come with ext3 already
built in, and there's an ext3 update for them at 

	http://www.uow.edu.au/~andrewm/linux/ext3/

The Red Hat rawhide kernels at 

	ftp://rawhide.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/rawhide/i386/RedHat/RPMS

also contain recent ext3 built in.
