So it sounds like the generic i8100 problem rather than the generic
IBM disk problem.  And yes,

ide=nodma does help, but it's usually needed for the installer.  If
you saw error marks on the disk before running the upgrade, sounds
like your problems are not limited to the install/upgrade, but
ide=nodma may very well still help (albeit with a performance cost).
