Sorry, suitably vague as to be useless :-)

More info for you all. I just checked dmesg (the fs tripped into ro mode
again last night) to get my system output and found this:

EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)): ext3_readdir: directory #80865 contains a
hole at offset 4096
Aborting journal on device md(9,8).
ext3_abort called.
EXT3-fs abort (device md(9,8)): ext3_journal_start: Detected aborted
journal
Remounting filesystem read-only
Remounting filesystem read-only
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted

This continues for a while.... maybe around 100 lines before:

EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in ext3_delete_inode: Journal has aborted
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in ext3_delete_inode: Journal has aborted
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted
EXT3-fs error (device md(9,8)) in ext3_delete_inode: Journal has aborted

Then nothing more before I started to fix it.

Does this give any more pointers?

Thanks for all your help so far. Here is the disk/IDE config:
