ext2 and ext3 really are essentially the same filesystem; the main
reason for calling it "ext3" is really to distinguish the
implementation more than the filesystem *format*, which is basically
the same.  The ext2/3 filesystem format is designed to be easily
extensible, and indeed we're planning on adding a number of new
features in the near future, including fast directory lookups, etc.  I
doubt we will be bumping the number every time we add a new feature!
(Or at least, I seriously hope that we won't!)
