Filesystems have nothing to do with partition checks.  I'd
double-check your kernel config first.

It looks like a common problem with some current IDE driver/controller
combinations --- there are IOs failing to complete, so the first time
you try to read data from the disk, things lock up.  That occurs
during the partition read.

Try booting with the "ide=nodma" kernel option; that may work-around
the problem.
