and, of course, I forgot

 5. Make sure the GTK+ file chooser bookmarks and the Nautilus bookmarks
    (are they the same? I keep forgetting) got the folders as default

I also recall that Mandriva is doing something like this already; it's
probably worth looking into the specifics.
