exchange server alternatives

Theres open groupware:

http://opengroupware.org/

Not sure how well it scales, never tried it, buts its an idea. 

You could also get all the functionality you need by using open source
products to handle imap, an mta, and a directory service for an address
book. The only thing that you can't implement in that way is calendaring
afaik.
