I was wondering why fedora has choosen yum over apt-get

I'm rather wondering this too... It takes a _long_ time to download
these headers.

Can yum (correct me if it does already):

1) compress the .hdr files
2) Use HTTP 1.1 Pipelining or keepalive support?

I guess since apt just downloads a large file once, it has less setup/
teardown for TCP/IP. Or am I showing my ignorance?
