I don't know.  I actually don't have any <=i586 systems, but I do use 
2.4 vanilla kernels without NPTL on some systems by necessity.

Apparently rpm is supposed to be a special case, with both NPTL and 
NPTL-less db4 functionality built into it.  rpm has its own db4 which is 
separate from the installable db4 used by other apps like subversion.  I 
personally have never run into rpm database corruption on i686 and 
athlon with vanilla 2.4 kernels.
