Is there a GUI front-end for sudo? (And, ideally, a good API for editing its
config file?) These are definitely both different approaches to the same
problem, but currently, they both have various strengths and weaknesses.
Significant work would have to go into one of them in order to drop one.
Although, since sudo isn't configured by default or used by anything, it's
possible *that's* a candidate.

It was the gnome desktop manager before nautilus. I assume that's why it's
still around.
