The only reason I need to change the clock by hand on my core 2 duo is because some apps (windows games started using wine) behave weird when they are started with 1 GHZ and the cpu runs @ 2.17GHZ. If I switch to perfomace before starting they work fine. (could be some tsc issue; no idea games are closed source)
