Thanks Jesse, in no scientific manor what-so-ever, nohz=off appears worse!

On average at 1000BT I can transfer ~500meg (nfs large files) before
it hard locks.

Have you tried booting with 'nohz=off' ?  Disabling the tickless kernel may
help things.
