1.) Or go to Applications > Accessories > Take Screenshot > right click
and use either add to panel or add to desktop. The panel may make screen
shots easier for menus.
2.) Right click on the new icon> select properties.  In the command box
after gnome-screenshot add --delay=seconds i.e.
gnome-screenshot --delay=3

The idea is to find a long enough delay so that you can click your new
screenshot icon and then navigate the menus for the capture.  The reason
for the delay is noted by Matthias Clasen above.
