Which means that you can't run your choice of tests on a message during the smtp conversation before you accept it - at least without starting a new process for each one which is expensive for large programs like spamassassin. And if you accept a message but don't deliver it, you are supposed to generate a bounce to the sender, but that is always the wrong thing to do if you think it might be spam or a virus. Running your checks in time to do an smtp reject eliminates that problem.
