For Debian people tried and (almost) succeeded.
See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=271654

In general when you want to get some of these things working with a free
toolchain make sure that you check how the Debian hackers are doing and/or
cooperate with them: http://java.debian.net/index.php/MovingJavaToMain

Last year Dalibor got most of it working with kaffe:
http://www.kaffe.org/pipermail/kaffe/2003-December/096361.html

We have a much more complete class library now (both kaffe and gcj use GNU
Classpath as provider of the core class libraries). But you might need to use
CVS versions of kaffe or gcj. Feel free to ask for support on any of the kaffe,
gcj or GNU Classpath mailinglist if you try it out.

Thanks,

Mark
