Well, it depends on which dictionaries are you using. I
fixed similar problem before. but it still appears for some
reason in IIIMF and not updated for default.canna file. I'll
update Canna package to improve the kanji conversion on
IIIMF then.

Well, if you are using 0.82 or later, you can commit the
preedit string with ENTER on gaim. and also send the message
with ENTER then.

nope, it's not customizable unfortunately. however basically
it's decorated as well, no? current position to convert the
word to Kanji should be highlighted, and the string which is
in preedit should be underlined. which applications did you
experience that the preedit strings looks like committed
strings?
