I went through a similar head-banging experience trying to get my new Treo
600 to sync. Then almost by accident I discovered that the physical USB
port I was trying to connect to was completely inop. I switched to another
that I knew was working, and POOF! I had a /dev/pilot device and
everything else.

Just a thought...
