Ok, so before you installed/upgraded packages all was working? You
upgraded inside the Fedora Core 1 release or did you install packages
from the development tree? Do you remember what you installed? I am no
apt/synaptic user, but it may have a log about what's done.

Ok, if it run before it should be possible to switch it back to it's
former state.

The log indicates each line with one of:
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting, (++)
from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational, (WW) warning, (EE)
error, (NI) not mplemented, (??) unknown.
So read the log line by line using "less /var/log/XFree86.0.log" and
check especial for lines starting with (WW) or (EE).
