kernel-2.6.8-1.520 (i586) and no X

FC2 on an older system, but it has been working great. Previous kernel
version is 2.6.6-1.435.2.3 (i586).

I installed the new kernel (2.6.8-1.520) and the booted into this new
kernel and everything goes great. Get the graphic login, so I log in
and the screen turns blue (normal) but the gnome loading windown never
shows and then (sometimes) shortly after I get a error dialog that says
something like Couldn't start X for 10 seconds. I've tried a bunch and
the only thing that seems to relate here is that I can not log in via
SSH or if I ctrl+alt+backspace I get dumped out to the command line
login prompt and if I enter root and the password, it lists the last
system that logged in but never displays a prompt. That is the same
thing that SSH does as well. It's almost like I cant log in.

If I reboot and select the old kernel all work find. I'm not thinking
that the problem is X because of the login thing... But I really don't
know what to look at. Did a google search but it didn't reveal
anything. Any ideas?
