SB Live! not working on Fedora Core 2

Doing what, exactly does sound not work for?  I had a similar problem
when running FC1 and KDE.  When I logged in, sound started, then as KDE
started up it suddenly stopped.  I would have to kill off artsd in order
to play sound with xmms.
