Are you sure it was really a name issue?  Routers, unlike most
other devices, typically cache arp entries that tie IP addresses
to MAC ethernet addresses for up to 20 minutes.  If you
change an existing IP number so it now goes to a different
ethernet card you can connect immediately within the local
subnet but you have to wait for the arp cache timeout
before you can connect over a router (or until you clear
it's cache).
