Samba smbmount failing to observe uid/gid

Thank you, that resolved the uid issue. However, the I/O error, which I 
had assumed was related, still
remains. If I copy a new file to the server it's OK. If I then repeat 
the copy without previously deleting
the file, I get the I/O error after several seconds.

Any clues?
