New kernel 2.4.22-1.2713 crashes, has difficulty installing

In our case (Dell 2650, serverworks chipset, single HT P4 Xeon), commenting
out

  alias usb-controller usb-ohci

in /etc/modules.conf allowed us to boot and seemingly worked flawlessly.
