This is what I get:

[agreen at fastcat agreen]$ host www.xs4all.nl
www.xs4all.nl has address 194.109.6.92

Also have a look in /etc/nsswitch.conf, at the hosts line, this is something 
to do with name resolution too.  Is ifconfig telling you your network 
interface is happy?  Do you have multiple network interfaces?  Is it possible 
that TCP/IP is somehow not available as a protocol?
