I think I know the symptoms you're talking about. Try this:

RedHat -> Sound & Video -> Volume Control

Bring the volume sliders all down to about 75%. I have my mic and igain 
down to 0% since I'm not taking any input sound. When I had all of them 
up to 100% I was getting some pretty ugly crackling just as you described.

Turn up the volume on your external speakers to bring the volume up or 
down to compensate for the change.

That worked for me.
