I am using the 2.6.6-1.435.2.3 kernel with fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm 
fine.

Do an /sbin/lsmod and make sure the radeon module is not loaded.
If any is, reboot and do not load X (2.6 kernels do not support 
rmmod). Then try the make install again.
