Mine was getting the same error until I edited the /etc/cdrecord.conf file.

 cdrecord -scanbus   finds:

        1,0,0   100) 'ATAPI   ' 'DVD-ROM 16X     ' '422L' Removable CD-ROM
        1,1,0   101) 'PLEXTOR ' 'CD-R   PX-W4012A' '1.01' Removable CD-ROM

I edited my cdrecord.conf file and now it contains:

        CDR_DEVICE=PLEXTOR
        CDR_FIFOSIZE=4m
        PLEXTOR=        ATA:1,1,0       -1      -1      burnfree

# cdrecord -v windows.iso
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Asuming -tao mode.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent
defaults.
cdrecord: Continuing in 5 seconds...
