I tried the ftp version of SUSE also.  (recently reloaded that box with
FC2)  It was ok.  But I did find that they almost forced you into using
YAST for config changes.  

I am wary of some kind of monolithic program that reads and writes
config files.  Problems of dealing with version differences would be
very difficult to handle.  

Something like this would require each package include a configuration
rules file of some kind so it would know the syntax and options
available in each config file for that particular version.  Not really
impossible but very difficult to maintain.
