For what it's worth, here's my ~/.vnc/xstartup file:
#!/bin/sh
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
exec gnome-session &
There's probably a similar exec for XFCe.
VNC is kicked off on display 1 here:
more /etc/sysconfig/vncservers
VNCSERVERS="1:myuserid"
