Try adding the line...

         Option      "UseBIOS" "off"

to your /etc/X11/XF86Config.

So it will look something like (just the videocard section)...

Section "Device"
         Identifier  "Videocard0"
         Driver      "savage"
         VendorName  "Videocard vendor"
         BoardName   "S3 ProSavage"
         Option      "UseBIOS" "off"
