Unable to install or update to Fedora Core 2 2.6 kernel via yum

You don't think you want to do a yum update for the kernel. The kernel 
should always be installed. I do not think yum distinguishes with 
packages in that fashion, (updates if it is a "regular" package and does 
an actualy install for packages such as the kernel).

Have you tried:

yum install kernel    ?
