Either an "incompatibility between" or a "bug in either of" hdc (which I
presume is your DVD drive) and your IDE adapter. Or one or the other of
them is partially broken. Or it *could* be your IDE cable.
It's unlikely to be a bug in (the design of) your IDE adapter: Linux
would detect it.
Try booting with " ide1=nodma" on the kernel command line (in Grub, edit
the standard entry with "e" and add that to the end of the line that
starts "kernel").
