This isn't necessarily true. There are a number of places that a user
name can be "hidden" in an e-mail header (for example, "delivered to ...
for username"). Fetchmail can be configured to pick up on almost any of
them.
For example, I used to get list e-mail through my Fedora account [1]
and mail would come with this header:
Received: from punt-3.mail.demon.net by mailstore
for fedora at westexe.demon.co.uk id 1CD7rs-0003q3-Cl;
and Fetchmail will happily (with a bit of prompting) work out that it's
for fedora at westexe.demon.co.uk.

[1] I've currently switched to having inbound Fedora mail coming through
Gmail: I like keeping an archive, but I'm worried about blowing Demon's
mail quotas if I don't download e-mail while I'm away.
