Dumb question about Cups

Afternoon Everyone,

One quick question bout cups.  I am still running RH9 fully updated with 
all the latest patches, just waiting for FC3 final release to upgrade. 

The other day there was an update to cups and this morning my kid was 
trying to print from her, don't shoot me here, windozes PC.  Anyways 
after checking the log files I saw that raw was not enabled.  After 
looking at the mime.types and mime.convs file, at the bottom, raw was 
commented back out.  Is this normal for cups to overwrite these files?  
If so, when I upgrade any other utilities, should I make sure that I 
backup any config files first that I have modified before upgrading?
