Run and use the smartd (man smartd), which makes use of the S.M.A.R.T.
features of modern hard drives. This will alarm you if a unrecoverable
drive failure is to be expecting.

Using lm_sensors you might too monitor the drive's temperature which is
a sensible factor for drive health too.
