I haven't got anything in my /etc/X11/applnk:

[charshaw at simba applnk]$ pwd
/etc/X11/applnk
[charshaw at simba applnk]$ ls -a
.  ..
[charshaw at simba applnk]$

But keep those ideas coming -- I'm eager to fix this thing!
