PostgreSQL logs to syslog if configured to do so.
What Markus was trying there was to get starting errores without having to
change the postgresql.conf file.
I would have persoanlly said this:
1) Login as postgres
2) Run "/usr/bin/initdb --pgdata=$PGDATA" (see the error messages). If
everything is OK continue, else, correct what is wrong and go back to (2).
3) (if (2) came out OK) Run /usr/bin/pg_ctl start
4) If everything is OK
4a) run /usr/bin/pg_ctl stop and then /etc/init.d/postgresql start
4b) if not, read the error messages and correct what is needed, then go back
to (3).
