ln -s ~/wwj/thunderbird/thunderbird /usr/bin

Now you can just issue the command thunderbird to launch it. In GNOME, you
can edit your preferences and set your preferred email app to Mozilla
Thunderbird. It would be better, however, to unpack the tarball to a common
directory so that all users may access the one install.
