I have been in that situation before. I had developed bad sectors on both
drives and when one failed the array couldb't be rebuilt. The drives
won't remap bad sectors unless it either gets a good read or you rewrite
the sector. I was able to copy over sectors between drives using dd and
was able to recover from the situation.
