Some cards won't scan with the module shipped; my card needs the
orinoco_cs drivers from cvs to scan properly.

If scanning is working you should see nearby networks when you click
on the radar icon.

Mine only requires me to enter WEP keys once, I only have to enter an
ESSID if the AP is not broadcasting.

 Make sure your card supports scanning (use iwlist - if it won't scan
properly you'll get an error). More information on your wireless card
would also be helpful. Are you using something that is natively
supported or ndiswrapper?
