If you build your own custom kernel RPM as described at:
http://crab-lab.zool.ohiou.edu/kevin/kernel-compilation-tutorial-en/
then you can remove the kernel using "rpm -e" just like you would with
an "official" kernel, which would correctly handle the kernel, its
initrd, grub/lilo, modules etc.
