|Hi,
|I'm haviong trouble using tar to backup to tape.
|I have FC3 (last updated on 22nd July) with an HP DAT 72i tape drive.
This was
|installed and working fine since March this year. Just recently
(could be
|coincidental with the update), backups have been failing. This is a
72Gb tape
|drive, and it is reporting 'no space left on device' after backing
up just
|2048 bytes.
|I have run the HP diagnostic tool and all tests pass. Also, I have
cleaned the
|drive, usedf new and old tapes.
|
|There are no entries in /var/log/messages relating to the backup failure.
|
|I have tried a raw write using dd, and that aborts after a couple of
Mb of
|data.
|
|/proc/scsi identifies the drive correctly (along with the Adaptec
SCSI card).
|
|Any ideas would be gratefully received.
|
|Many thanks.
|
|Stuart.

It would also help us if you sent a sample of the command you used to
start tar to do the backup. Usually with tar you need to specify the
- -f /dev/nst0 or simular to backup to the drive. You do have to
replace the /dev/nst0 with the device name for your tape drive.
