When we changed from mbox to mbx mailbox format, we saw much improved 
performance too (better file locking and seek-times primarily).  I would 
venture to guess the improvement in the same ballpark as when you 
switched to cyrus-imapd (which uses MailDir format, I believe, which has 
similar benefits)
